Jess Spencer’s life is going nowhere. Stuck living with her father and having recently dropped out of university, her future doesn't look particularly bright.
That is, until a chance encounter reunites her with former school friend and successful children’s writer Daisy Shelby. When Daisy offers her a spare room and a chance to escape her humdrum life, Jess jumps at the chance, soon finding herself surrounded by an eclectic group of friends such as Hugh Darvill, a narcissistic erotic novelist, and Barney Fields, Daisy’s live-in boyfriend and illustrator.
On the outer edge of the group is Emmett - Daisy’s brother and wannabe sci-fi author, who Jess coincidentally met and formed a strong bond with just over a year ago - and Jenny Sinclair - Daisy's excitable and eccentric literary agent and self-appointed friend.
As the group forge key relationships, dealing with the strains of life - and often each other - they come to rely on their friendships in ways only a family would truly understand.
